Around 1973, two large statues, originally called “Muffler Men,” were created by California’s Prewitt Fiberglass in. They were sold to Lumberjack café on Milton road, where they drew attention to people passing by for several years. These statues can be seen in the 1969 film, Easy Rider, where they stood in front of the café. Eventually, however, the café was purchased by the Zanzucchi family, renamed “Granny’s Closet,” and the statues were donated to NAU. The statues originally stood at Lumberjack Stadium until they were moved in 1979. Today, one of the statues is still used in front of the Walkup Sky dome as a twenty-foot portrayal of Louie the Lumberjack.
In 1966, Charles Bonney, a former NAU athlete and artist, created a bronze Lumberjack statue after being commissioned by President J. Lawrence Walkup. This statue, modeled after himself, stood in front of the university bookstore until it was moved in 2008 further towards central campus
