Secretary Aspin briefed reporters in the Pentagon on the introduction of a new policy to allow women positions on combat aircraft and open up new positions for women on Navy ships. He said he would send legislation to Congress that would allow women on combat vessels, and would order the Marines to look for new positions for women in field artillery positions. The new policy would not allow women to participate in combat infantry positions. Secretary Aspin said the new policy would increase the available pool of talent for military positions. Following Secretary Aspin’s remarks and departure, General McPeak introduced three female combat pilots in training, who responded to questions from reporters on their reaction to their new positions. close
