Description

This box reliquary was made in Limoges, France, and is decorated with gilt and enamel. The majority of the reliquary is colored blue, with golden figures, words, and designs standing out against the uniform color. Jesus is depicted from the waist up with his arms spread in the middle of the front of the lid, with two angels below him and Saint James to his sides.

Copper: engraved, scraped, stippled, and gilt; champlevé enamel: blue-black, two medium blues and one light blue, turquoise, light green, yellow, red and white, 4 1/2 x 2 1/4 x 2 7/8in. Across the lid the words, "S/ANCTUS] / IACOB[US] / IH / S[US]" are inscribed, meaning Saint James, Jesus.
