Description
-
The AIDS quilt project began in San Francisco in 1985 as a way of honoring those who lost their lives to AIDS. As it gained public recognition, people from across the world sent panels to San Francisco to be incorporated into one massive quilt. This photograph shows a scene from the quilt's unfolding at the National Mall, where it was displayed several times during 1987 and 1988. The White House is visible in the background of the image, but it is dwarfed by the sheer size of the AIDS quilt in the foreground. Panels are laid out in blocks with paths between for dozens of visitors to walk without damaging the material.
