Description
-
Allen first began photographing the transgender and genderqueer community by accident in 1978, when she spent Mardi Gras in the same hotel as a group of heterosexual male "crossdressers" and became friends with them. Since then, she's gone on to write five books about her photography of the queer community around the world. In this photo, a "crossdresser", named Andy/Andi, stands beside an ironing board and drapes a piece of orange fabric across it. They wear beige shapewear that creates the form of breasts and larger buttocks. Daylight shines through a window in the background and the presence of a lamp implies this is some sort of domestic space.
