Description
-
Andrews, a lesbian and staff photographer at The Washington Post, was determined in the 1980s to create the queer representation she wished had existed when she was discovering her own sexuality. She traveled the country and photographed willing participants, including Lorelei Holness (right) and Deborah Rowett (left), who are pictured in this image. The two are in their late twenties at the 1991 Prince William (Virginia) Gay and Lesbian Alliance Prom. Holness, a Black woman, wears a dress, corsage, tiara, string of pearls, and a grin. She holds a bouquet of roses and accepts a kiss on the cheek from Rowett, a white woman with cropped hair and a tuxedo.
