Carle, a queer Puerto Rican photographer, focuses on capturing images of marginalized groups, especially those who are queer and/or Latine. In this image from the 2000 New York City Pride March, Sylvia Rivera, a legendary figure in the LGBTQ+ movement who was at the Stonewall riot, is flanked by her partner, Julia Murray (right) and activist Christina Hayworth (left). The three women sit on a short wall and hold hands. To their left, a sign reads "Respect trans people / men!"
