Born in Holstein, Iowa, John graduated with honors from Morningside College in Sioux City. He earned graduate degrees from the University of Iowa, Truman University, & the University of New Mexico. Before coming to Northern Arizona University, John taught at West Texas A&M University & at New Mexico Tech (1970-98). He  co-edited The New Mexico Humanities Review for 15 years (1978-93). His writing is both analytic & creative. Translated into French, German, Polish, & Japanese, his critical essays have been published in 11 countries. In addition to professional writing, John is also interested in American pragmatism & postmodernism, specifically in the work of Richard Rorty & Charles Taylor. Abroad he has taught at: Tokyo University Keio University (Tokyo) Al-Azhar University (Cairo) The Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore The Indian Institute of Technology in Madras The Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur The University of Maryland at Kuala Lumpur Eastern Mediterranean University (Cyprus) Khon Kaen University (Thailand) Saudi Arabia, State Dept.
