American fashion designer Claire McCardell (1905-1958) fitting one of her dresses to a model in a workroom alongside some of the women employed by McCardell making garments. McCardell is known as the first designer to design and produce affordable (off-the-rack) women’s clothing with pockets. While Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel was known for producing women’s clothes with pockets and for popularizing pants (also with pockets) for women, Chanel’s clothes were expensive and generally only worn by the rich and famous. In contrast, McCardell pioneered casual and comfortable sportswear for women, designing affordable women’s clothing that was fashionable, stylish, practical and comfortable.
